To Ward Off Evil

To ward off evil
You must travel
Seven miles beyond
the place where the ground is level

Walk in circles for 10 feet
Ignoring every one you meet
To ward off evil, this you must complete

Listen near
Till you hear
A painted bird singing words
plain and clear

Take its place and sing its song
Getting every word wrong
Then evil is not long for this world

Cast your spell
Work it well
Every skeptic you must thoroughly compel

Then go home and go to sleep
knowing all of this will keep
and evil can only sit and weep

  1. You mean my sage and garlic isn't enough anymore??

These instructions are confusing. I just know I will mess something up --say--walk in circles for 9 feet, or listen to the wrong bird. What befalls me then??
