Igual Mente

Strange, this phenomenon of “igual mente” that seems to be occurring between Mony and me. I was all set to write about peach pie yesterday but got too busy. Today I open her blog and she is writing about pastries. Coincidence? I think not!

When I worked at MAPI, one of the Hispanic employees said “igual mente” to me one day. He said it means, “we think alike.”

Yes, there is a stupefying parallel that is happening between two sisters. Now, if she should start writing about pasties instead of pastries, then I don’t know what is going to pop into my head but it could be alarming.

I mean, WHICH one of us is leading the thoughts of the other – or do we switch off? Does it take the both of us to create the one thought? And what if she starts thinking about something for days on end – will my mind go there too? Do we drag each other around through various “thought gardens?” Am I at times an unwilling “thought tourist” in the holiday of her mind?

And conversely – can I begin to affect her thoughts by concentrating hard enough? Can I make her think about Republicans and red meat if I want? And of course, the question we really need to ask is – was she REALLY born 3 yrs and 8 months after me, or was she born at the same time and is my twin? Was her existence kept secret at birth, to be revealed at a later date? Is she REALLY already 50 years old????

  2. HA! You wish I were a half-century old like you. You are way off, sis, but you have also stumbled upon a secret that I had sworn I would never share. You know how you were supposed to be the baby of the family? That is how it was planned. But turns out they needed me...to help you...there was a procedure...some harvesting of gray matter....more than enough to share...a sacrifice I was willing to give, even though I wasn't asked...yes, you are wittier and sharper than me, because my reaction times were slowed...due to the procedure...I've kept silent all these years--even when you stuffed your toes into my mouth, and used my own arms as weapons against me, asking, "why are you hitting yourself?" and called me "Simone the Usurper." BUT. My brain still leads your brain. You ARE a tourist in the holiday of my mind! A brilliant way to put it, but I'll have you know I had that thought first.

  3. I AM LITERALLY CRYING I AM LAUGHING SO HARD!! People here at work thought I had Tourette's or something!!

But seriously, my little Fantasina, there was no harvesting of brain matter, no toes stuffed into mouths. What folly! There is only the churning of your little mind, which causes a slight humming sound and an occasional whisp of smoke as you crank out these implausible pastiches of some imagined childhood in which you are both the victim AND the heroine, it would seem. Ah, but you are right that even as I type this I can feel myself being inexplicably drawn into this weird landscape!! A true accidental tourist I tell you!!

  4. Oh, there were toes stuffed into mouths! You know it! But I will leave it at that. I am truly happy that you have grown up to be a highly functioning adult. That's all that matters.

Meanwhile, continue to enjoy the scenery...

  5. You both have it wrong. It is I who is planting thoughts of pastries, peach pies, etc. in both of your minds. Bwa ha ha ha ha!

  6. Damn. Is that why I keep having visions of some grizzled old mountain man playing clawhammer banjo?
